Just below the SLR level, Canon S5-IS, I love mine.

Also the new Canon SX10IS, looks great and is actually cheaper than the lower spec'd S5..

i've gotten a few recommendations, and im going to do a bit o research before i dive in. im really partial to canons, so itll probably be a canon brand. unless i can find an ultra cheap nikon but we'll see.
